Akshaya Sivakumar: Sisterhood!

The sisterhood aspect of Setons was a huge part of why I applied for this club, and a huge part of why I’ve loved this year so much. I’ve loved getting to build relationships with 29 other girls through service and other events. Our bonding through service has been unlike any other service I’ve done. Having the opportunity to go to a pumpkin patch, go bowling and make cookies with our friends at Artisans as well as each other, has created memories that will last forever. I know that when I’m looking back on my college experience, the relationships I’ve developed with these girls will remain a highlight.

The rest of my spare time this year has been spent being an RA on the Women for Others floor in Coughlin Hall. This floor requires my residents to complete 20 hours of community service, while also remaining active members on the floor. The relationships I have developed through Setons has been a constant encouragement for me to try and help my residents create strong, similar bonds with each other. Service has the ability to bring people together, just as living with 40 girls on the same floor does.

Going to the Women’s March in Spokane with my residents was a similar experience to what service through Setons has been. There is something special about coming together, to stand for people you care about. The sisterhood aspect of Setons has helped me see the power that a group of women can have when they come together. It’s hard to accept that our year of being a part of this club is flying by, but I know that the bonds we’ve made this year will last a lifetime. I am so excited to see how much closer we grow and how many more memories we can make.
